Ophthalmic Surgical Blade CNC Grinding Machine

Ophthalmic Surgical Blade CNC Grinding Machine

1. Sub-Micron Edge Precision — Achieves edge radius below 10 µm and cutting-edge straightness within ±0.005 mm, meeting the strictest ophthalmic surgical standards for corneal and incisional accuracy.
2. Ultra-Fine Surface Finish — Delivers surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.01 µm on blade bevels, eliminating tissue drag and ensuring smooth, atraumatic incisions during cataract, glaucoma and vitreoretinal procedures.
3. Five Axis Interpolated CNC Control — Simultaneous 5-axis motion grinds complex blade geometries — crescent (tunnel), side-port, lance, MVR, diamond-knife profiles — in a single setup with full repeatability.
4. Wide Material Compatibility — Optimized for 316LVM / 420J2 surgical stainless steel, zirconia ceramic, sapphire and polycrystalline diamond (PCD) blade substrates, with adjustable grinding wheel speed and coolant delivery.
5. Medical-Grade Production Consistency — Closed-loop servo system + in-process measurement compensation ensures CPK ≥ 1.67 across batch production, supporting ISO 13485 and FDA 21 CFR Part 820 quality system requirements.

CNC Grinding Machine for Ophthalmic Surgical Blades

The Ophthalmic Micro Blade CNC Grinding Machine is a purpose-built, ultra-precision grinding center engineered for the manufacture of disposable and reusable ophthalmic surgical knives. Designed for medical device OEMs and precision blade subcontractors, the machine integrates 5-axis CNC motion, high-frequency air-bearing spindles, and diamond/CBN wheel technology to produce the razor-sharp, micron-scale cutting edges demanded by modern eye surgery.

Every ophthalmic blade — whether a 2.6 mm crescent tunnel knife, a side-port lancet, a 20G/23G MVR vitreoretinal blade, or a microsurgical scalpel — requires geometric perfection: consistent bevel angles, zero micro-chipping, and mirror-like surface finish. This machine is built to deliver exactly that. Its granite-based bed, linear-motor-driven axes, and thermal-symmetric structure guarantee long-term dimensional stability in production environments, while the intuitive medical-blade-specific software reduces programming time and operator skill requirements.

From thin stainless steel shims (0.08–0.3 mm) to ceramic and sapphire blade blanks, the system handles the full spectrum of ophthalmic blade substrates. Dedicated workholding fixtures for straight blades, tubular shafts, and plastic-handle integrated knives allow manufacturers to cover the entire product range of microsurgical knives, including cataract, glaucoma, corneal transplant, and vitreoretinal instruments.

Processing Range / Compatible Blade Types

This grinding machine is designed to process the full range of ophthalmic and microsurgical blade geometries, including:

  • Crescent / Tunnel Knives — 2.2 mm, 2.6 mm, 2.75 mm, 2.8 mm, 3.0 mm (clear corneal tunnel incisions for cataract surgery)
  • Side-Port / Lance Knives — 15°, 20°, 30° side-port lancets for phacoemulsification incisions
  • MVR / Vitreoretinal Knives — 19G, 20G, 23G, 25G, 27G pars plana vitrectomy blades
  • Microsurgical Scalpels — #64, #65, #69, #70 / mini-blades for corneal, conjunctival and skin incisions
  • Piercing / Stab Knives — 1.0 mm, 1.2 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm micro-punctures
  • Diamond / Sapphire Knives — Clear corneal diamond knives, iridectomy knives, keratome blades
  • Custom Micro-Blades — Neurosurgical, dental, ENT and micro-dissection blades with bespoke profiles

Compatible materials:

  • Surgical stainless steel (316LVM, 420J2, 440C, 17-4PH)
  • Zirconia / alumina ceramic blade blanks
  • Single-crystal sapphire
  • Polycrystalline diamond (PCD / CVD diamond)
  • Tungsten carbide micro-shafts

Operating Precautions & Quality Guidelines

  1. Cleanroom Environment Recommended — The machine should be installed in a temperature-controlled (20 ± 1 °C), humidity-stable cleanroom (Class 100,000 or better) to prevent thermal drift and particle contamination on finished blade edges.
  2. Wheel Dressing Before Every Batch — Always dress the diamond/CBN wheel with a precision diamond dresser at the start of each production run and after wheel change; worn wheels cause edge burrs and micro-chipping that ruin blade sharpness.
  3. Coolant Concentration & Filtration — Maintain coolant concentration at 5–8% (emulsion) or use oil-based coolant for ceramic/sapphire grinding. Replace filter elements regularly to keep particle contamination below 5 µm; contaminated coolant scratches blade surfaces.
  4. Workholding Fixture Calibration — Calibrate the blade collet/fixture with a dial indicator or laser alignment system before each new blade program. Misaligned workholding is the #1 cause of inconsistent bevel angles and asymmetric blades.
  5. Edge Integrity Inspection — Verify blade edge radius under a 200×–400× toolmaker's microscope or SEM on first-article samples. Reject any blade with visible micro-chipping, burrs, or edge rolling.
  6. Operator Training — Only trained personnel familiar with medical blade tolerances and ISO 13485 documentation requirements should operate the machine. Every batch must be logged with program number, wheel ID, and inspection results for traceability.
  7. Routine Maintenance — Inspect spindle runout, linear scale accuracy, and coolant filtration system quarterly. Replace air-bearing spindle seals every 12 months to maintain sub-micron precision.
